Sarah Young, Magic City Acceptance Project (MCAP)

Sarah Young will inform guests about the prevalence of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning or queer) individuals in the workforce, and what HR professionals can do to attract and include members of these communities as an important part of today’s diverse workforce.

Bio:  Sarah Young, MSW is a Social Work PhD student at the University of Alabama.  Born and raised in a rural town in Upstate New York, Sarah fell in love with the Deep South and lived in Mississippi from 2008 to 2012 working as an LGBTQ youth organizer.  She is co-founder and former program manager of the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition, a youth-led LGBTQ+ youth advocacy group working to make school climate safer for LGBTQ+ youth.  Sarah is an adjunct instructor in the Social Work Departments at Mississippi State University and at the University of Montevallo.  Sarah is a Point Foundation Scholar and her dissertation will focus on the innovative community organizing strategies employed in the Deep South to support LGBTQ+ youth.  She has two cats (Jonesy and Marx) and a partner who is also a PhD student, which makes for interesting conversations and plenty of books in the house.
